THE LOYALIST GAZETTE
Are you interested in: 1) the history of Canada; 2) genealogy of United Empire Loyalists; or 3) activities of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada? If you answered YES to one or more of these subjects you will enjoy reading The Loyalist Gazette.
The only magazine published in Canada about the role United Empire Loyalists and their descendants played during the American Revolution and afterwards is The Loyalist Gazette. I was honoured in June 2025 to become Chair of the Committee which now creates it, taking over from Bill Russell, UE, who became President of the UELAC. Other current members of the Committee are Diane Faris, UE, Stephen Davidson, UE, and Amanda Fasken, UE.
The Loyalist Gazette was first published from 1931 to 1933 and then ceased publication until 1967 when it was revived by E. John Chard , UE, during his time as President of the UELAC. He was the Editor until 1987 when he was succeeded by David K. Dorwood, UE.
In the spring of 1997 Michael Johnson, Assistant Editor, took over with the resignation of David K. Dorwood, UE. The Managing Editor was Ed Scott, UE, Vice President of the UELAC. In the Spring of 1998 three persons were named as Assistant Editors. They were Doris Lemon , UE , for Branch News, Mary Beacock Fryer , UE, as Historical Assistant Editor, and Peter W. Johnson, UE, as Re-enactor Editor. Later that year Peter was chosen as the new Editor.
Robert Collins McBride, UE, became the Editor in the Spring of 2004 and continued until 2022 when the Board of the UELAC approved the creation of a Loyalist Gazette Committee to oversee its’ publication. The members were Carl Stymiest, UE, Vice - President of UELAC , Jennifer DeBruin, UE, and Amanda Fasken, UE. In 2024 Bill Russell, UE, took over as Chair of the Committee. Carl Stymiest, UE, and Jennifer DeBruin, UE, departed. Diane Faris, UE, and Stephen Davidson, UE, joined.
There have been changes in the appearance and content of The Loyalist Gazette over the years of publication.
During the 1970s articles from learned academics were included with news from branches of the UELAC. Some issues also included letters from readers, branch articles for sale, book reports, and crossword puzzles. For several years the names of those obtaining new UE Certificates were also given along with the ancestor and branch.
In recent years there have been some guest editors including Nathan Tidridge, UE, researcher, author, and educator. He was editor of the Fall 2022 issue. It explored indigenous and crown relations in Canadian history with articles on:
- "The Chapels Royal in Canada", excerpt, as appeared in A Resilient Crown, Canada's Monarchy at the Platinum Jubilee, edited by D. Michael Jackson and Christopher McCreery
- "Allies of Subjects? The Haudenosaunee and their Place in Canadian History", by W. Barry Hill, Warden of the Mohawk, Member, Six Nations of the Grand River
- "British - Indigenous Relations during the War of 1812", by Jake Breadman, Ph.D. student at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario
-"The Queen is Dead - Long Live the King", by Ven. Rosalyn Kantlaht'ant Elm, Archdeacon for Reconciliation and Indigenous Ministry in the Diocese of Huron, Royal Chaplain, Her Majesty's Chapel of the Mohawks.
The Loyalist Gazette is published twice yearly, in the Spring and the Fall. It is provided free to all members of the UELAC in digital or paper format. Others can request copies or purchase it by emailing communications@uelac.org
