ADMIRAL DIGBY LIBRARY AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY

This year, 2026, marks the 60th Anniversary of the Admiral Digby Library and Historical Society which operates the Admiral Digby Museum in Digby.  It was named after Admiral Robert Digby (1732 - 1814), commander of British naval forces in New York at the end of the American Revolution. He arranged for ships to transport approximately 1,500 Loyalist refugees in 1783 to Nova Scotia that settled in the town and county which both took his name.

A report in the Digby Courier Newspaper of June 24, 1976 noted:

Judge John Nichols was on Tuesday evening re-elected president of the Admiral Digby Library and Historical Society when the annual meeting was held at the Digby Baptist Church.  Other officers elected were Honoray Vice - president, Judge V.G. Cardoza, vice - president  Lawrence Banks, Jr., treasurer, F.C. Purdy, and secretary, Miss Mary Marshall.

The Board of Trustees include: Mrs. Donald Brown, Miss Louise Daley, Mrs. Richard Denton, Mr. Harold Emerson, Mr. Barry Jennings, Dr. Alexander Leighton, Mrs. Douglas Lewis, Mrs. Percy Robert, Mr. Philip Robertson, Mrs. MacLeod Rogers, Mrs. Louise Stephen, Miss Regina Tate, Miss Marjorie Tupper and Mrs. Hubert Warne.

Ex - officio members are: Mayor Charles Haliburton, Warden Wilfred Swift.

Committee chairpersons for 1976 - 77 will be: Finance, Mr. C. Purdy, Treasurer; Building, Mr. Emerson and Mr. Banks; Program, Mrs. Brown, assisted by Miss Tate and Mr. Jennings; and Publicity, Miss Tate. The Museum Coordinator will be Mrs. Rogers, and the membership chairperson will be chosen June 28th.

It was also noted in the newspaper report that the local Horticultural Society prepared the window boxes for the building each year.

DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON

Actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was born on 2 May 1972 in Hayward, California and is a seventh generation descendant of a Black Loyalist mentioned in the Book of Negroes who settled in  Amherst , Nova Scotia. He holds dual American and Canadian citizenship.   'The Rock' The Rock is descended from James Bowles who arrived in Annapolis Royal from New York on board the ship named Joseph on 9 November 1783. His name appears in the Book of Negroes, spelled as James Bowels of age 28 . It was a ledger of approximately 3,000 Black Loyalists made by the British before their evacuation from New York in 1783 which included names, ages, and origins. THE LOYALIST TOWNSHIPS

My ancestor James Humphrey who served with Jessup's Rangers during the American Revolution was granted land after the conflict to settle in   Edwardsburgh Township.  There is a monument to him and other United Empire Loyalists at   Johnstown within the township, which I visited as appears in a YouTube video near the bottom of this page.  Other Rangers received lands in   Augusta  ,  Elizabethtown  , and  Ernestown  Townships.  These were four of the initial thirteen Loyalist Townships created in Upper Canada, now Ontario.  The Loyalist townships in Ontario  The original Loyalist townships created in Ontario for Loyalists were established beside the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.
