BISHOP CHARLES INGLIS, U.E.L.

There are possibly more ways and places of remembrance to Bishop Charles Inglis,  United Empire Loyalist (U.E.L.),  than any other.  Among them, the government of Canada issued a stamp with him on it in 1988.

Who was he? A plaque on the outside of  St. Mary's Anglican Church in Auburn,  Nova Scotia states:

UNITED EMPIRE LOYALIST - FIRST BISHOP OF NOVA SCOTIA

BORN IN GLENCOLUMKILLE, IRELAND, MISSIONARY OF THE
SOCIETY FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE GOSPEL AT
DOVER, DELAWARE, FOURTH RECTOR OF TRINITY CHURCH,
NEW YORK, CONSECRATED AT LAMBETH PALACE, LONDON,
AUGUST 12, 1787 AS BISHOP OF NOVA SCOTIA.
FOUNDER OF KING'S COLLEGE SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY
AT WINDSOR, NOVA SCOTIA. BISHOP INBLIS WAS THE
PRIME MOVER IN THE BUILDING OF MANY CHURCHES,
INCLUDING ST. MARY'S CHURCH, AUBURN, THE SEVENTH
CHURCH BUILT IN THE DIOCESE, AND THE SECOND
CONSECRATED BY HIM. (OCTOBER 10, 1790) RESIDENT
AT "CLERMONT" , AUBURN FOR 21 YEARS OF THE 29 YEARS
OF HIS EPISCOPACY.  DIED THERE IN 1816. FAMILY MOTTO:
"IN VAIN, UNLESS GOD BE WITH US."

A memorial to Bishop Inglis appears in St. Paul's Anglican Church in Halifax.  On the church floor there is as well a plate that indicates where he was buried underneath in the crypt.  

The Anglican Church of Canada commemorates in its calendar on August 12th the anniversary of the consecration of Charles Inglis in 1787 as the first colonial Bishop of the Church of England in Canada.  In his birthplace of Ireland, the Church of Ireland, commemoration is observed on August 16th.


Other recognitions include:

1. The Hensley Memorial Chapel at King's Edgehill School in Windsor, Nova Scotia has a window in the Chancel devoted to Bishop Charles Inglis as founder of the School and University;



2.  At Clermont, near Auburn, Nova Scotia, is a plaque on a large stone marking the location of his former home and the wall dug there in 1792;

3.  In the present day Trinity Church in New York, New York, USA is a plaque in memory of him as Rector and later as Bishop of Nova Scotia and first colonial Bishop of the Church of England;



4.  At St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland is a sliver plaque to him;

5. There is a memorial plaque to Bishop Charles Inglis, his first wife Mary, and two children at Christ Church, Dover, Delaware, USA, where he ministered some years before leaving as a Loyalist and his appointment as first colonial Bishop of Nova Scotia.

6. Memorial tile placed in St. Alban the Martyr U.E.L. Memorial Church at Adolphustown, Ontario to Bishop Charles Inglis. 

7. In Halifax,  Nova Scotia, Inglis Street is named for Bishop Charles Inglis. 

8. Inglisville in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia is named after Bishop Charles Inglis.

DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON

Actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was born on 2 May 1972 in Hayward, California and is a seventh generation descendant of a Black Loyalist mentioned in the Book of Negroes who settled in  Amherst , Nova Scotia. He holds dual American and Canadian citizenship.   'The Rock' The Rock is descended from James Bowles who arrived in Annapolis Royal from New York on board the ship named Joseph on 9 November 1783. His name appears in the Book of Negroes, spelled as James Bowels of age 28 . It was a ledger of approximately 3,000 Black Loyalists made by the British before their evacuation from New York in 1783 which included names, ages, and origins. THE LOYALIST TOWNSHIPS

My ancestor James Humphrey who served with Jessup's Rangers during the American Revolution was granted land after the conflict to settle in   Edwardsburgh Township.  There is a monument to him and other United Empire Loyalists at   Johnstown within the township, which I visited as appears in a YouTube video near the bottom of this page.  Other Rangers received lands in   Augusta  ,  Elizabethtown  , and  Ernestown  Townships.  These were four of the initial thirteen Loyalist Townships created in Upper Canada, now Ontario.  The Loyalist townships in Ontario  The original Loyalist townships created in Ontario for Loyalists were established beside the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.
