LOYALIST TRAILS, NEWSLETTER OF THE UELAC

For over 22 years, Doug Grant, U.E.  has been editing Loyalist Trails, the email newsletter of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada (UELAC). It includes articles and information about United Empire Loyalists, the American Revolution, and Canadian history, as well as the activities of the UELAC.  He recently explained to me that when he began it in 2004, his objective was to bring Loyalist information out from under the bushel.

 

The number of subscribers has grown from 220 during the first year of operation to over 2100. Subscriptions are free and open to the public. You can receive the newsletter by completing information at the below link.



The first issue was released on April 28, 2004, while Doug was on a trip visiting each of the Prairie Region branches of the UELAC with President Myrna Fox, U.E. and Western Region VP Margaret Carter, U.E.. This was before the  Assiniboine Branch formed.

Publication of Loyalist Trails was sporadic at first. However, it became weekly in mid - 2005 and continued in that format. It began with a few articles and information.  This expanded to include a weekly contribution from historian, retired educator, and author Stephen Davidson and articles by others on historical and genealogical topics. It also mentions UELAC news, updates to the online Loyalist Directory, and links to interesting social media items. 

In addition to getting out Loyalist Trails every week, Doug is an active member of Governor Simcoe Branch of the UELAC, where he has held all offices.  He also served as President of the UELAC from 2002 to 2004 and has volunteered on many national committees, In 2011, he was the recipient of the Dorchester Award.

On August 17, 2014, I contributed my first article in Loyalist Trails.  It was entitled Nova Scotia's First Multi-Racial Refugees: The Loyalists. Some 49 more articles prepared by me followed it, as well as, since September 1, 2025, there have been 85 posts from my blog U.E. Loyalist History .

The   Loyalist Directory  serves  as a key resource for genealogists and history enthusiasts to research ancestors who remained loyal to the British Crown and settled in Canada after the American Revolutionary War. DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON

Actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was born on 2 May 1972 in Hayward, California and is a seventh generation descendant of a Black Loyalist mentioned in the Book of Negroes who settled in  Amherst , Nova Scotia. He holds dual American and Canadian citizenship.   'The Rock' The Rock is descended from James Bowles who arrived in Annapolis Royal from New York on board the ship named Joseph on 9 November 1783. His name appears in the Book of Negroes, spelled as James Bowels of age 28 . It was a ledger of approximately 3,000 Black Loyalists made by the British before their evacuation from New York in 1783 which included names, ages, and origins. THE LOYALIST TOWNSHIPS

My ancestor James Humphrey who served with Jessup's Rangers during the American Revolution was granted land after the conflict to settle in   Edwardsburgh Township.  There is a monument to him and other United Empire Loyalists at   Johnstown within the township, which I visited as appears in a YouTube video near the bottom of this page.  Other Rangers received lands in   Augusta  ,  Elizabethtown  , and  Ernestown  Townships.  These were four of the initial thirteen Loyalist Townships created in Upper Canada, now Ontario.  The Loyalist townships in Ontario  The original Loyalist townships created in Ontario for Loyalists were established beside the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.
